BURLINGTON, Vt. – A Burlington woman is in custody after allegedly threatening a victim with a knife, assaulting them, and attempting to steal their purse, police reported.
The incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on South Winooski Avenue, prompting officers to respond to reports of an assault.
According to authorities, 41-year-old Shelly Sanders approached the victim with a knife, which escalated into a verbal and physical altercation. During the struggle, Sanders allegedly sprayed the victim with mace before attempting to snatch their purse.
Following the attack, Sanders fled the scene but was apprehended about 30 minutes later on North Winooski Avenue after a brief foot chase with law enforcement.
She now faces multiple charges, including first-degree aggravated domestic assault and assault and robbery.
Police have not yet disclosed further details regarding the victim’s condition or whether Sanders had any prior criminal history.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
