Indiana’s Surprise Freeze: What You Need to Know Before Tuesday Morning

Indianapolis, IN – Residents across Indiana are being warned to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures as a cold front moves in, bringing sub-freezing conditions as low as 23°F by Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for much of the state, cautioning that unprotected plants, crops, and outdoor plumbing could be at risk during the early hours of April 8.

A Cold Snap to Start the Week

After a weekend of milder spring weather, many Hoosiers may be caught off guard by the abrupt temperature plunge. Forecasters say overnight lows will dip well below freezing, especially in central and northern Indiana, with temperatures dropping into the low to mid-20s in some areas.

“This kind of cold can do serious damage to early garden growth or sensitive vegetation,” warned NWS meteorologist Craig Adams. “People should take precautions to cover plants and disconnect any outdoor hoses.”

Precautions Urged for Gardeners and Homeowners

Gardeners who may have started planting early are being urged to cover or bring in potted plants and use frost blankets or sheets to protect in-ground vegetation. Farmers in particular are being advised to monitor vulnerable crops.

Homeowners should also consider protecting exposed pipes, particularly if they are in unheated garages or basements. Pets and livestock should be brought indoors or provided with proper shelter.

“This late-season freeze is not unusual for Indiana,” Adams added. “But it’s always better to be safe and take a few steps now to avoid costly damage.”

Drivers, Be Cautious of Morning Frost

In addition to damage to plants, the temperature drop may also lead to patchy frost on roadways and windshields during the Tuesday morning commute. Drivers should plan for a few extra minutes to scrape frost and drive cautiously, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Temperatures are expected to slowly rebound during the day on Tuesday, reaching the mid to upper 40s in most areas, but another chilly night is forecast for Tuesday evening, keeping the risk of frost in play through midweek.

Spring Will Return—Eventually

The cold snap is expected to be short-lived. Meteorologists say temperatures will return to the 60s and 70s by the end of the week, but until then, residents should remain alert for additional freeze or frost warnings.

“It’s a little reminder from Mother Nature not to put the winter coats away just yet,” said Adams with a chuckle.
