Storm Watch: Eugene’s Weather Set to Turn Wild With Thunder and Wind Gusts Monday
Eugene, OR – If you’re heading out in Eugene on Monday, you might want to grab your umbrella and brace for a blustery day. The National Weather Service has issued a weather alert as a storm system moves into western Oregon, bringing with it scattered showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts up to 18 miles per hour.
Wet Weather to Start the Week
Meteorologists expect the first round of rain to hit the Eugene-Springfield area by mid-morning Monday, with thunderstorm activity picking up in the afternoon. The showers may become heavy at times, especially during stronger cells.
Rainfall totals could range from 0.25 to 0.75 inches, with locally higher amounts possible where thunderstorms develop. Roads may become slick during the day, and drivers should exercise caution, especially during the afternoon commute.
Thunderstorms Could Bring Brief Downpours
The storm system is unstable enough to spark isolated thunderstorms throughout the Willamette Valley. While these aren’t expected to be severe, they could produce brief heavy rain, occasional lightning, and gusty winds.
“We’re not expecting any widespread severe weather, but people should stay weather-aware,” said NWS forecaster Laura Dunn. “Thunderstorms could move in quickly and bring short bursts of heavy rain and gusts strong enough to sway small trees or disrupt outdoor plans.”
Winds to Pick Up Throughout the Day
In addition to the rain and rumbles of thunder, winds are expected to increase steadily through the afternoon. Sustained winds will remain around 10 to 15 mph, but gusts could reach up to 18 mph by the late afternoon or early evening, especially during thunderstorms.
While these aren’t damaging winds, they could blow around lightweight outdoor items or make for breezy conditions on bike paths and open roads.
A Break in Sight by Tuesday
The good news? The system is expected to move out fairly quickly. By late Monday night, rain chances will begin to drop, and by Tuesday morning, Eugene should see a return to drier conditions with partly sunny skies.
Temperatures will remain cool, with highs on Monday in the mid-50s, warming slightly into the 60s by midweek.
Stay Safe and Stay Dry
Eugene residents are encouraged to check the forecast before heading out, avoid flood-prone areas during downpours, and be mindful of changing conditions, especially if planning to be outdoors.
The spring season can bring quick shifts in weather across Oregon, and Monday is shaping up to be one of those days where the skies could turn dark in a flash.
