Man Charged with Murder Following Duplin County Shooting Incident
Duplin County, N.C. – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this month in an Eastern Carolina community.
According to the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shooting in the Rose Hill area on January 11th at approximately 12:30 a.m. Emergency calls reported a violent incident that left two individuals injured.
Law enforcement, including deputies and ECU Health police, intercepted two separate vehicles transporting the shooting victims to the hospital. Tragically, one of the victims, 20-year-old Ty’Marcus Newton, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the knee and is expected to recover.
Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from a fight at a birthday party. The altercation escalated, leading 20-year-old Khamani Morrisey to fire his weapon, striking both victims. Following the incident, Morrisey fled the scene.
After a week-long investigation, Morrisey turned himself in to authorities at the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, January 16th, at approximately 4 p.m. He was subsequently charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Morrisey is currently being held in the Duplin County Jail without bond.
