Tragic Family Incident: Henderson Parents in Court After Son’s Accidental Shooting of Brother

A heartbreaking and tragic incident continues to unfold in Henderson, Nevada, as parents Jerel Reyes, 52, and Bryanna Reyes, 51, appeared in court nearly a year after their 12-year-old son allegedly shot and killed his 14-year-old brother. This case, which has left the community in shock, raises serious concerns about firearm safety and child protection.

On January 25, 2024, police responded to the Reyes’ home after a report of a shooting. The younger sibling admitted to the accidental shooting during a fight over a phone, claiming he didn’t know the gun was loaded. The tragic result was the death of his older brother, Aizeya Reyes, due to a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen.

The parents, arrested on February 7, 2024, now face two counts of child abuse and neglect. Authorities discovered 15 firearms unsecured and accessible in the Reyes’ home, some of which were loaded. Prosecutors argue that the negligent storage of firearms directly contributed to the tragic incident.

Jerel Reyes stated he moved his family from Hawaii to Las Vegas due to the cost of living and purchased firearms for protection, teaching his children gun safety. However, the devastating consequences of unsecured weapons have cast a grim shadow over these intentions.

During a preliminary hearing in Henderson Justice Court, the couple agreed to waive further hearings and proceed directly to the Clark County District Court. Their attorney declined to provide details of any negotiations or defense strategy.

This tragedy underscores the critical importance of responsible firearm storage and education. The community mourns the loss of a young life and awaits justice as the case moves forward. The Reyes’ next court appearance is scheduled for January 28, 2025, in Clark County District Court.
