SBI Investigating Deputy-Involved Shooting in Duplin County, N.C.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Friday morning in Duplin County, North Carolina.

According to the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call around 4:15 a.m. concerning a domestic disturbance on Howards Farm Lane in the Beulaville area. The caller reported that a man armed with a knife was threatening to kill a woman.

Upon arriving at the scene, a deputy encountered the suspect, identified as Jonathan Duncan. Authorities say Duncan was armed with both a knife and a pair of scissors. The deputy issued multiple commands for Duncan to drop the weapons. However, according to reports, Duncan refused to comply and continued moving toward the deputy in a threatening manner.

The situation escalated, leading the deputy to discharge their firearm, striking Duncan. After being shot, Duncan was taken into custody without further incident. Emergency medical assistance was provided, and Duncan was transported for medical care. His current condition has not been disclosed.

Duncan now faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon against a government official and resisting arrest. Sheriff Stratton Stokes has stated that additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. Sheriff Stokes has confirmed that the SBI will handle the investigation to ensure transparency and an impartial review of the events leading to the shooting.

The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identity of the deputy involved, and it remains unclear how many shots were fired during the encounter. More details may become available as the investigation progresses.

This marks the latest in a series of officer-involved incidents in the region, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces in responding to potentially volatile situations. Local residents are urged to cooperate with authorities as the investigation unfolds.
