The family of Anthony Egeonu, a security guard fatally shot while confronting shoplifters at a CVS Pharmacy in downtown Dallas, is grappling with profound grief and heartbreak following the tragedy. Egeonu, 39, was killed late Friday night as he attempted to stop shoplifters leaving the store. He leaves behind his wife, Octavia Egeonu, and three children, who are struggling to process their loss.
Egeonu’s daughter, Amari, shared her pain, recalling her father’s sense of humor. “He would always try to make a joke out of something, even if it was corny. I’ll always feel bruised from this situation because my dad is no longer here,” she said.
Two juvenile suspects were apprehended within 24 hours of the shooting. Due to their ages, authorities have not released their identities. The victim’s mother, Gwendolyn Pipkins, expressed her sorrow and determination for justice, stating, “They made a choice to leave us grieving and in pain, but I know the Lord will ensure justice is served.”
The incident has also highlighted concerns about crime in the area surrounding the CVS Pharmacy. Despite being aware of the risks associated with his job, Egeonu’s wife, Octavia, said her husband was deeply passionate about law enforcement and dedicated to protecting others. She emphasized that the family would rely on their faith for strength and healing, saying, “This family is wounded, but we will make it through because we serve a savior who has already conquered.”
For Gwendolyn Pipkins, this tragedy is particularly devastating as Anthony is the second son she has lost to violence. Reflecting on her faith, she added, “When I feel weak, I know I am strong because God carries me when I cannot carry myself. Right now, I know God is carrying me.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Egeonu family during this difficult time, as Anthony was their sole provider. The fundraiser aims to help the family cope with their unexpected loss and navigate the challenges ahead.
