An 80-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in his parked SUV on Wednesday morning in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Chicago. The tragic incident has left residents shocked and saddened.
“What a terrible world we live in,” said a 69-year-old man who has lived in the neighborhood for 12 years. “I’m praying for his family.”
Another resident reported hearing six gunshots but initially thought it was construction noise. “Why would someone shoot an elderly man?” questioned another neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous.
The shooting happened around 10 a.m. in the 1400 block of West 90th Street. The victim was sitting in a burgundy SUV when another vehicle, possibly a black GMC, pulled up. Someone inside the GMC opened fire, hitting the man in the head and back. The suspect then drove away, heading south on Bishop Street, according to police.
The 80-year-old victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
A woman named Ashley, who was walking her dog nearby, said she saw a black vehicle pass by. Moments later, she heard six to eight gunshots. Before the vehicle sped away, she noticed the victim slumped over in the driver’s seat.
Ashley, who was getting into her car to attend a job fair around noon, said she is frustrated with the ongoing violence in the area. “This happens all the time. My car has been shot at multiple times,” she said, pointing to bullet holes covered with flowers and Hello Kitty decals. “I just want to move away.”
According to police radio reports, the shooter was in a newer model GMC driven by a woman. Both suspects were described as heavyset. They were last seen driving south on Bishop Street.
No arrests have been made yet. Area 2 detectives are investigating the case.
