LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has expanded its policy on reporting foreign-born individuals to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the passage of the Laken Riley Act.
Under the revised policy (4.166), the Detention Services Division will notify ICE when a migrant is arrested and charged with violent felonies, domestic violence, DUI, burglary, theft, larceny, petit larceny, or assault on a law enforcement officer. Notifications will occur at the time of booking and release.
However, police clarified that they will not delay an inmate’s release for ICE but will honor judicial warrants from the agency. If ICE is not present when the inmate is released, the individual will still be discharged.
The policy revision follows national discussions on immigration enforcement, sparked in part by the tragic murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old woman allegedly killed by Jose Antonio Ibarra, an undocumented immigrant who was previously arrested for illegal entry in 2022.
LVMPD emphasized its commitment to public safety while ensuring professionalism in its enforcement efforts. Meanwhile, FOX5 has reached out to Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Nevada State Police to determine if they will adopt similar policies.
