PLAINFIELD, Ind. – A devastating car crash in Plainfield has shattered a family, leaving a mother grieving the loss of her 2-month-old daughter while her 3-year-old son fights for his life with severe burns.
The tragic incident unfolded Wednesday when an Avon police officer attempted to pull over a speeding vehicle near U.S. 40 and Ronald Reagan Parkway. Witnesses say the suspect’s car raced through the intersection, colliding with another vehicle and sending it flipping down the road before bursting into flames.
Inside the car were Shadow Moore, his infant daughter Iris Moore, and his fiancé’s 3-year-old son, Ares Vawter.
“There’s no words to describe it,” said a witness who watched the horrific crash. “It was in flames—it was a crazy situation.”
As flames engulfed the car, bystanders and police desperately tried to rescue the children. Tragically, baby Iris did not survive. Her older brother Ares is now in critical condition at Riley Hospital for Children, suffering from extensive burns.
Jack Vawter, Ares and Iris’s mother, is devastated.
“It’s really hard to watch him in so much pain,” she said through tears. “He’s sedated, but he tries to move and cry.”
Moore had been driving the children home after a doctor’s appointment, where Iris had just received a clean bill of health.
“She was growing great, perfectly healthy and happy,” Vawter said. “And within 30 minutes, she was gone.”
Ares, despite his injuries, still showed his bright spirit in the ambulance, excitedly telling paramedics about stickers he got earlier that day.
Moore, who suffered broken ribs, a fractured spine, and a lacerated spleen, was discharged from the hospital Thursday.
“I’m going to hug him and never let go,” Vawter said.
The driver responsible for the crash, S’Doni Pettis, was on probation at the time and has been arrested.
Vawter, overwhelmed with grief and frustration, has a powerful message:
“Drive safe. Hug your kids. Appreciate every moment—because you never know when everything could change.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family, and Vawter is grateful for the community’s outpouring of love and prayers.
