LAWRENCE, Ind. – A routine traffic stop turned into a dramatic police chase Wednesday night, ending in the arrest of a man already facing multiple felony charges.
According to the Lawrence Police Department (LPD), an officer attempted to stop a vehicle near E. 52nd Street and Elmhurst Drive. However, the driver, identified as 26-year-old Ashuntiz Stewart, refused to comply and sped away, initiating a brief but intense pursuit.
The chase escalated when Stewart abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, leading officers to an apartment on Foxborough Drive. There, after a short standoff, police apprehended him without further incident.
A search of Stewart’s vehicle uncovered a handgun and narcotics, further complicating his legal troubles. Authorities confirmed that Stewart was prohibited from possessing firearms, as he already had nine separate felony cases pending against him, with his most recent charge filed on January 2.
Following his arrest, Stewart was preliminarily charged with:
- Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun
- Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle
- Possession of a Narcotic Drug
- Dealing in Marijuana
- Criminal Recklessness
- Driving While Suspended
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine the final charges against him as the case moves forward.
This latest arrest adds to Stewart’s extensive criminal history, raising concerns about repeat offenders and public safety in the community. LPD continues to urge residents to report suspicious activities as they work to keep the streets safe.
