In a shocking turn of events, two key members of the notorious Southall drug trafficking organization have been sentenced to federal prison, marking a major victory in the fight against illegal drug operations.
On Friday, Marvin McCaine, a Mobile resident, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his involvement in the drug ring. U.S. District Judge Terry F. Moore handed down the sentence after McCaine pleaded guilty in April 2023 to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel Hines, another Mobile resident, faced the same charge and was sentenced on January 29 by U.S. District Judge Kristi K. Dubose. Hines received a prison term of over six years, followed by five years of supervised release.
According to federal prosecutors, both McCaine and Hines played significant roles in distributing large quantities of cocaine throughout Mobile. Their names were found in the drug ledgers of Darrin Southall, the leader of the criminal organization. Investigations revealed that they were responsible for handling multiple kilograms of cocaine in the area.
The crackdown on the Southall drug ring began in 2021, leading to the arrests of dozens of individuals involved in the operation. Authorities have successfully prosecuted about 30 members in federal court so far, making this one of the most extensive drug-related cases in Mobile’s recent history.
Adding to his punishment, McCaine’s previous drug conviction led to the revocation of his probation. Judge Moore imposed an additional 37 months in prison, to be served consecutively with his existing sentence. Once released, McCaine will remain under federal supervision for 10 years.
Prosecutors also announced that all seized assets linked to McCaine and Hines have been forfeited to the U.S. government, further dismantling the drug network’s financial gains.
This big news signals a strong stance against drug-related crimes in Mobile, with authorities vowing to continue their pursuit of justice against those fueling the illegal drug trade.
