Brutal Cold and Snow for South Dakota—Are You Ready for This Weather Nightmare

South Dakota is in for a brutally cold night, with temperatures plummeting well below zero and wind chills making it feel even worse. The National Weather Service has issued wind chill warnings and advisories across the state, warning that frostbite can happen in minutes if you’re not properly dressed.

How Cold Are We Talking?

It’s already dangerously cold across the state, but things are about to get even worse as the night goes on.

  • Sioux Falls is currently seeing light snow with temperatures hovering around 1°F (-17°C). Tonight, that’s going to drop to -20°F (-29°C), and strong winds will make it feel much colder.
  • Rapid City is slightly “warmer,” if you can call it that, sitting at 0°F (-18°C). By morning, expect it to fall to -5°F (-21°C) with bitter wind chills.
  • Aberdeen is already feeling the worst of it, with temperatures sitting at -19°F (-28°C). Overnight, it could drop to -22°F (-30°C), and the wind will only make it more unbearable.

Why This Cold Is So Dangerous

This isn’t just a typical winter chill—it’s dangerously cold weather that can turn deadly. Wind chills could make it feel 30 to 50 degrees below zero, which means frostbite can set in within 5 to 10 minutes. Hypothermia is also a huge concern for anyone who doesn’t have proper heating or warm clothing.

How to Stay Safe

  • Stay indoors as much as possible. If you absolutely have to go outside, dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and don’t stay out for long.
  • Check on family and neighbors. Elderly individuals and those without adequate heating are at the highest risk in this extreme cold.
  • Bring pets inside. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Make sure animals have shelter and access to unfrozen water.
  • Prepare for power outages. The extreme cold can put stress on power grids, so have blankets, extra food, and flashlights ready just in case.

More Snow Coming for Valentine’s Weekend

As if the bitter cold wasn’t enough, another round of snow is expected just in time for Valentine’s Day weekend. Light snow is in the forecast for Friday, February 14, which could cause slippery roads and travel issues. With temperatures staying this cold, don’t expect ice to melt quickly—any snow we get will stick around.
