Treacherous Commute Ahead! Major Snowstorm to Dump Heavy Snow Across Idaho by Friday

A significant winter storm is set to hit Idaho over the next 24 hours, bringing heavy snowfall, dangerous road conditions, and freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for parts of the state, warning that up to 6 inches of snow could accumulate by Friday morning. The storm is expected to impact both commuters and travelers, with slick roads and low visibility creating hazardous driving conditions.

Snowfall Breakdown: What to Expect in Your Area

Weather conditions will worsen as the storm moves in, with snow expected to begin early Thursday and intensify throughout the day.

  • Boise is currently experiencing clear skies with temperatures around 10°F (-12°C), but that won’t last long. By Thursday afternoon, cloudy skies will give way to steady snowfall, with 2 to 4 inches of accumulation possible. Highs will reach 32°F (0°C), but wind chills will make it feel even colder.

  • Idaho Falls is already dealing with frigid temperatures at 7°F (-14°C). Snow is expected to develop by Thursday afternoon, bringing 1 to 2 inches of accumulation. The temperature will hover around 21°F (-6°C) during the day and drop to 19°F (-7°C) overnight, making roads icy and treacherous.

Why This Storm is Dangerous

While Idaho is no stranger to snow, this storm is particularly concerning because of its timing and intensity. Snow will fall steadily for over 12 hours, meaning roads will quickly become slick and dangerous. In some areas, visibility may drop below 1/4 mile, making travel extremely hazardous, especially during the morning and evening commutes.

Icy roads, reduced visibility, and snow-packed highways will make driving extremely difficult. If you must travel, allow extra time, drive slowly, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

How to Stay Safe During the Winter Storm

  • Avoid unnecessary travel – If you don’t have to be on the road, stay home. Conditions will rapidly deteriorate, making it dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians.
  • Prepare for possible power outages – Heavy snow and strong winds could bring down power lines. Keep blankets, flashlights, and emergency supplies handy in case of outages.
  • Check your car’s emergency kit – If you must drive, pack extra blankets, food, water, and a flashlight in your car in case you get stranded.
  • Keep an eye on weather updates – Conditions can change quickly. Stay tuned to local forecasts and official updates to track the storm’s progress.

What’s Next? More Snow Possible After Friday

The snowstorm isn’t the only weather threat on the horizon. Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on another potential system that could bring additional snowfall early next week. While details are still uncertain, it’s a sign that winter is far from over in Idaho.

For now, Idaho residents should focus on getting through the next 24-48 hours safely. Whether you’re commuting to work or planning weekend activities, stay prepared and take this storm seriously. The roads will be dangerous, temperatures will remain bitterly cold, and snow will pile up quickly. Stay safe, Idaho
