Spring Delayed! Winter Weather Freezes Pittsburgh With Icy Roads and Snow

PITTSBURGH, PA – Just when it seemed like spring was around the corner, a blast of winter weather is set to bring snow showers and bitterly cold nights to Pittsburgh through Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service has issued an alert, warning that temperatures will plunge well below normal, and snow could make travel hazardous, especially during the early morning and evening commutes.

How Much Snow to Expect?

Weather models indicate that light snow showers will continue off and on throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, with some areas seeing up to 2 inches of accumulation. Higher elevations and spots near the Laurel Highlands may see slightly higher totals, though snowfall is expected to be more of a nuisance than a major storm event.

The biggest concern is overnight freezing. With temperatures dropping into the mid-20s°F (-4°C) overnight, any moisture left on roads could freeze and create dangerous black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads.

How Cold Will It Get?

This sudden return to winter will have Pittsburgh feeling 10 to 15 degrees colder than normal for late March. Daytime highs will struggle to reach the upper 30s°F (3-4°C), while overnight lows will dip into the mid-20s°F (-4°C). Typically, Pittsburgh sees highs around 50°F (10°C) this time of year, making this a significant cold snap for late March.

What This Means for Residents

The combination of freezing temperatures, snow showers, and strong wind gusts could create several challenges:

  • Icy Roads: Early morning and late-night travel could be hazardous as any melted snow refreezes overnight. Drivers should allow extra time for their commute.

  • Cold Wind Chills: Gusty winds up to 20 mph will make it feel even colder, so bundle up if heading outdoors.

  • Heating Concerns: With a prolonged cold spell, residents should make sure their heating systems are functioning properly and check on vulnerable family members or neighbors.

What’s Causing This Late-Season Cold?

Meteorologists explain that a low-pressure system over the Great Lakes is funneling cold Arctic air into Western Pennsylvania. This unsettled pattern is keeping snow showers in the forecast and preventing temperatures from rising. The good news? Warmer weather is on the horizon.

When Will It Warm Up?

Relief is expected by the weekend, as temperatures gradually return to the 40s°F (5-9°C). By early next week, Pittsburgh could finally see a return to more seasonable spring-like conditions.

How to Stay Safe

  • Drive Carefully – Watch for black ice and take it slow on icy roads.

  • Layer Up – Don’t be fooled by the calendar—bundle up and protect yourself from the cold.

  • Stay Informed – Monitor local weather updates in case conditions deteriorate further.

While March may be coming to an end, winter clearly isn’t finished just yet. Stay warm, drive safely, and get ready for a few more days of chilly surprises before spring finally settles in.
