Fire Danger Skyrockets! East Tennessee & Western NC Under Red Flag Warning—Here’s What You Need to Know

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for East Tennessee and Western North Carolina until 8 PM tonight, as dry and windy conditions create an extreme wildfire risk across the region. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant, as just one spark could ignite a fast-moving fire that would be difficult to contain.

With strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, the perfect conditions for a wildfire have set in. Fire officials have put emergency crews on high alert, and outdoor burning has been strongly discouraged.

Why Is the Fire Risk So High?

The region is experiencing a dangerous combination of weather factors that significantly increase the likelihood of wildfires:

  • Gusty Winds: Sustained winds of 15-25 mph, with occasional higher gusts, can quickly spread flames and make fires harder to control.

  • Low Humidity: Levels dropping below 25% mean that vegetation is extremely dry and ready to ignite.

  • Lack of Rainfall: Drought conditions in many areas have left the ground parched and highly flammable.

These factors together mean that any small spark—whether from a cigarette butt, a fire pit, or even machinery—could quickly turn into a dangerous wildfire.

Which Areas Are Most at Risk?

The highest fire risk is in areas with dense forests, dry brush, and high winds, including:

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park

  • Cherokee National Forest

  • Pisgah National Forest

  • Rural communities with large wooded areas

Residents in these regions are strongly advised to avoid any outdoor burning and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.

How to Stay Safe During the Red Flag Warning

Fire officials have provided key safety tips to prevent wildfires and protect communities:

  • Do NOT burn anything outdoors. Even controlled burns can quickly spread.

  • Be extra cautious with outdoor equipment. Sparks from chainsaws, grills, and vehicles can ignite dry vegetation.

  • Avoid discarding cigarettes carelessly. Always dispose of them properly to prevent accidental fires.

  • Have an emergency plan ready. If a fire does start, know evacuation routes and keep emergency supplies on hand.

When Will the Fire Danger Decrease?

The Red Flag Warning is set to expire at 8 PM, but that doesn’t mean the fire risk is completely gone. Humidity levels will increase slightly overnight, and wind speeds should calm down, but without significant rainfall in the forecast, dry conditions will persist.

Officials stress that fire danger remains high until the region gets substantial precipitation. Until then, residents must remain cautious, follow all fire restrictions, and report any suspicious smoke or flames immediately.

With extreme fire conditions in place, a single careless mistake could have devastating consequences. Now is the time to stay alert and take every precaution to keep our communities safe.
