Severe Storms to Impact Florence: Wind Gusts and Tornado Risk Expected Until 6 AM!

Florence, AL – A weather alert has been issued for Florence, as damaging winds and a tornado risk are expected to impact the area between midnight and 6 AM Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that severe storms could bring high winds, hail, and the potential for tornadoes overnight, making for dangerous conditions in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Damaging Winds and Tornado Threat

The storm system moving through northern Alabama is expected to bring strong, damaging winds that could gust up to 60 mph. These winds, combined with the threat of tornado formation, have prompted the issuance of Tornado Watches for parts of Florence and the surrounding areas.

The greatest tornado threat will occur between midnight and 3 AM, with conditions favoring the formation of quickly developing tornadoes that could cause destruction. The NWS has advised that residents take precautions to ensure their safety, especially those in mobile homes or other structures that may not be able to withstand severe winds.

Impact on Travel and Safety Precautions

For travelers in the Florence area, I-65 and US-72 may experience wind gusts and heavy rain, making travel hazardous. The NWS has urged residents to stay indoors and avoid driving during the height of the storm, particularly between midnight and 6 AM Thursday. Flying debris and power outages are also possible.

“These storms will bring an increased risk for tornadoes,” said meteorologist Jennifer Foster. “Everyone in the area needs to have a way to receive weather alerts, and if you are in a Tornado Warning, take immediate shelter in a basement or interior room.”

What to Expect: Overnight Conditions

As the storm system moves through, heavy rain and hail are expected, adding to the severity of the storm. Florence and nearby towns could see 1-2 inches of rain, which may lead to localized flash flooding.

Wind gusts will start to increase just after midnight, reaching their peak in the early morning hours. While tornado activity is difficult to predict, residents in Tornado Warning areas should act immediately to seek shelter in a safe place, away from windows and exterior walls.

By 6 AM Thursday, the storm should begin to move out of the area, with the threat of severe weather diminishing. However, some scattered thunderstorms may linger through the morning.

Preparing for the Storm

To stay safe during the overnight storm, residents are encouraged to:

  • Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts: Keep your phone fully charged and set up notifications for weather updates. Consider using a battery-powered weather radio for backup.

  • Secure outdoor items: Bring in any loose outdoor furniture, trash cans, or decorations that could become dangerous projectiles in strong winds.

  • Prepare an emergency kit: Have flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and enough food and water to last at least 24 hours, in case power outages occur.

  • Know your safe place: If you live in a mobile home or an area prone to tornadoes, have a plan to move to a more secure location, such as a basement or storm cellar.

Conditions Improve After the Storm

Once the storms move out of Florence by 6 AM Thursday, the weather will begin to improve. Clearer skies and cooler temperatures are expected for the rest of the day, with sunshine returning by Thursday afternoon. However, it’s important to remain cautious until the all-clear is given.
