Dangerous Winter Weather to Disrupt Commute in Central Maine – What You Need to Know!

Portland, ME – A winter weather advisory has been issued for Southern and Central Maine, with slippery road conditions expected to affect commuters until 10 AM Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that a mix of snow and ice will create hazardous travel conditions, particularly for those hitting the roads during the morning commute.

Slippery Roads and Icy Conditions Expected

The winter storm that began late Wednesday evening is bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain to much of Southern and Central Maine. The NWS forecasts 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation, with ice buildup up to a quarter-inch in some areas. These wintry conditions are expected to continue through Thursday morning, making roads particularly dangerous for travelers.

I-95, I-295, and Route 1 are expected to be the most affected, with slick spots and poor visibility in higher elevations and rural areas. The NWS warns that driving conditions will be dangerous, and travel should be avoided unless necessary.

Risk for Delays and Accidents

As snow and ice continue to accumulate overnight, the morning commute is expected to be challenging. State police are reporting an increase in minor accidents and road closures in certain areas. Drivers should expect slow-moving traffic and delays as the snow and ice cause poor road conditions.

“Roads will be slick and visibility will be poor, especially during the morning rush hour,” said NWS meteorologist David Wilson. “If you can avoid traveling, it’s best to wait until conditions improve. Otherwise, please be prepared for significant delays and hazardous conditions.”

Tips for Safe Travel

For those who must travel during the wintry weather, the NWS recommends taking extra precautions to ensure safety on the roads:

  • Slow down: Even if roads appear passable, snow and ice can create hidden dangers. Reduce speed and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

  • Clear your vehicle: Be sure to remove all snow and ice from your vehicle, including the roof, windshield, and windows, before driving.

  • Equip your car for winter: Make sure your car has winter tires and carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, blanket, water, and non-perishable snacks.

  • Avoid sudden movements: Make gentle adjustments when steering or braking to prevent your vehicle from sliding on icy surfaces.

When Will Conditions Improve?

The winter weather is expected to continue until around 10 AM Thursday, with conditions improving by the afternoon. As temperatures rise, the snow and ice will begin to melt, but some patches of ice may remain throughout the day, especially in shaded areas and higher elevations. Travelers are advised to remain cautious and continue to monitor road conditions.

By Thursday afternoon, conditions are expected to improve, with roads returning to normal and clearer skies across Southern and Central Maine.
