Mount Pleasant, Texas – A Flash Flood Warning is in effect across parts of East Texas, with torrential rain causing dangerous flooding in Mount Pleasant and surrounding areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent alert, warning residents to take immediate precautions as roads become impassable and floodwaters rise.
Heavy Rainfall Triggers Rapid Flooding
Since early Saturday afternoon, intense thunderstorms have dropped between 2 to 4 inches of rain, with more expected through the evening. The hardest-hit areas include Titus County and nearby parts of Camp, Morris, and Franklin Counties. With saturated ground and overflowing creeks, flash flooding is already underway in several neighborhoods.
The NWS emphasized that this is not a typical rainstorm. “Flash flooding is occurring or imminent,” the alert read. “This is a life-threatening situation. Move to higher ground now and avoid flood-prone areas.”
Roads Flooded, Travel Hazardous
Multiple streets in Mount Pleasant have been reported under water. Law enforcement is urging residents to avoid all unnecessary travel, as flooded roads can quickly become traps for drivers. In some locations, stalled vehicles have already had to be rescued from rising water.
Among the roads affected are sections of Highway 271, Business 67, and several rural routes throughout Titus County. Emergency services are on standby, and swift water rescue teams have been activated.
What Residents Should Do Right Now
Officials are urging people in low-lying areas to evacuate if safe to do so, especially if water is entering homes or access roads are being cut off. Flash floods can develop with little warning, and water levels may continue to rise even after the rain stops.
Here are key safety reminders:
-
Turn Around, Don’t Drown – Never drive through flooded roads.
-
Stay informed via local news, weather apps, and emergency alerts.
-
Charge your phone and have a flashlight ready in case of power outages.
-
Keep essential items and medications in a go-bag in case you need to leave quickly.
When Will the Rain End?
Meteorologists expect heavy rain to continue through late Saturday night, with additional rainfall of up to 1 to 2 more inches possible. Flooding is likely to persist into Sunday morning, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
The Flash Flood Warning remains in place until further notice. Officials will monitor conditions closely and issue evacuation orders or shelter locations if needed.
