Mount Greenwood Tragedy: Man Shot by Police After Violent Family Threat

A Chicago police officer shot and injured a man during a tense situation in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, according to police and sources.

The incident happened around 3:50 p.m. at a house on the 11000 block of South Millard Avenue. Police were called to the scene after receiving a report about a man with a gun.

When officers arrived, they saw the man leaning out of a second-floor window. Police ordered him to keep his hands where they could see them. One officer then fired their weapon, hitting the man. The impact caused the man to fall out of the window.

The man, whose age has not been released, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He is currently in serious condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Sources say the man may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. Before police arrived, the man reportedly called 911, claiming he had harmed his family and had weapons in his home. However, when officers checked the house, they did not find anyone else injured.

The officer involved in the shooting was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital for observation as a precaution. As per Chicago Police Department policy, the officer will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days while the incident is reviewed.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), which investigates all cases involving police shootings, is now handling the investigation. They are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact them at (312) 746-3609.
