New York City’s five-day streak without a shooting ended just minutes after the NYPD proudly announced the milestone. On Thursday evening, the police department posted on X, celebrating the city’s longest stretch without a shooting victim since the CompStat era began three decades ago. The post praised the hard work of NYPD officers for making it possible.
However, only four minutes later, at around 10:15 p.m., a 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in the leg in East New York, Brooklyn. The victim was rushed to Brookdale Hospital and is now in stable condition. No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting.
While the streak was short-lived, shootings in New York City are lower this year compared to 2024. So far, there have been 29 shootings in 2025, down from 39 during the same period last year. The number of victims, however, remains the same at 45.
Meanwhile, in Nashville, Tennessee, tragedy struck when 17-year-old Solomon Henderson opened fire at Antioch High School on Wednesday. Henderson fatally shot 16-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante in the cafeteria and injured two other students. One student was grazed by a bullet and treated at the hospital, while another was injured during a fall and required medical care.
The shooting ended when Henderson turned the gun on himself. Investigators later uncovered troubling online posts and writings by the gunman. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Henderson was active in forums promoting white supremacy and extremist ideologies. He expressed internalized racism, shame about his race, and antisemitic views in his writings.
The ADL reported that Henderson, who identified as an “incel” (involuntary celibate), was influenced by forums that linked his struggles to his race. These spaces fueled self-loathing and pushed him toward hate-filled ideologies. Some of his posts included content from the Goyim Defense League, a neo-Nazi group.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack. At this time, they have not found any clear connection between Henderson and his victims, and it is possible the shooting was random.
Both incidents underscore the ongoing challenges of addressing gun violence and extremist ideologies in the United States.
