Two people were fatally shot inside Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, on Monday evening, according to the Elkhart Police Department (EPD). The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m., sparking a swift response from law enforcement and first responders.

Upon arrival, officers found two victims inside the store who had suffered gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was confronted outside the grocery store, where an exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspect and police. The suspect was killed during the shootout.

Two officers were injured in the exchange. Both were transported to a local hospital, where one was discharged shortly after treatment, and the other remained in stable condition as of Monday night. Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese expressed his sorrow for the victims and their families, as well as for the injured officers and those who witnessed the tragedy. “In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community,” Milanese said in a statement, urging the public to keep all those affected in their thoughts and prayers.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun also addressed the incident, stating, “As details emerge about the shooting in Elkhart, we are in communication with state and local law enforcement.” He added that he and his wife, Maureen, are praying for the victims and their families.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation, which remains active. According to a statement released late Monday, there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities confirmed that the names of the victims, the suspect, and the involved officers are being withheld until family notifications are completed.

This tragic event has left the Elkhart community in mourning, with officials and residents seeking answers as the investigation continues.
