In a dramatic turn of events, John Demont Mickens, a man arrested in connection with an armed robbery, has now been identified as a suspect in another robbery, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO). Mickens was apprehended on Thursday after a call was made to Sumter County Dispatch about a robbery at a store on Camden Highway.
Deputies have now charged Mickens with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of pointing and presenting a firearm, and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. These charges stem from an armed robbery that took place on January 8 at a store on Highway 261 South and Wedgefield. In both incidents, Mickens allegedly entered the store as employees were closing, demanded money at gunpoint, and fled the scene.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis made a strong statement, emphasizing the tireless efforts of law enforcement, saying, “The perpetrators of criminal acts will never know a day when they can stop looking over their shoulders. The wonderful men and women of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office are the best.”
Mickens is also being investigated as a person of interest in similar robberies in other areas. Deputies are encouraging anyone with information about these incidents to come forward by calling the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 803-436-2000.
